Travis Hunter’s first NFL training camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars is off to a remarkable start, but the rookie star is balancing the weight of personal turmoil with professional expectations.

On the opening day of Jaguars rookie camp, the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner and former Colorado Buffaloes standout was one of the first players to hit the field. It was a clear signal of embracing the historic challenge ahead to be the first two-way player in the NFL's modern era. Hunter’s work ethic has already caught the attention of the Jaguars’ coaching staff, including Liam Coen who praised his approach and outlined a plan to manage Hunter’s unprecedented workload.

“You want to give him a couple of days’ offense, a couple of days’ defense,” Coen said. “Then give him the opportunity to flip-flop within the same practice. Once we do that, that will become the norm in how we operate, but it’ll probably be within the first week or so.”

While most rookies struggle to adapt to one NFL playbook, Hunter is learning two simultaneously and preparing to be both a cornerback and a wide receiver. His dual-role talents were showcased weekly at Colorado and are being fine-tuned for the next level. At Colorado, he routinely shut down receivers and served as quarterback Shedeur Sanders’ most trusted target.

However, Hunter faces a deeply personal challenge behind the scenes. His father, Travis Hunter Sr., was recently arrested for violating probation terms after his electronic monitoring device failed to track his location for 11 minutes on June 28, according to records obtained by USA TODAY Sports. A warrant was issued on July 10, and Hunter Sr., 39, was taken into custody in Palm Beach, Florida. He remains held without bond on charges stemming from a November 2023 arrest involving drugs and firearms.

According to court documents, Hunter Sr. initially told authorities he was in his bedroom while the device was in the living room, later claiming he had misplaced it. A judge ruled that he violated his probation by failing to comply with electronic monitoring requirements.

Hunter Sr. had previously missed his son’s Heisman Trophy ceremony due to house arrest but was granted an exception to attend the 2025 NFL Draft, where Travis was selected second overall in the by the Jaguars.

Despite the rollercoaster, Hunter remains focused on his NFL journey. As the Jaguars evaluate his progress, there is growing belief that the league may soon witness something not seen in over six decades, which is a true, full-time two-way NFL star. His ability to rise above adversity may prove just as defining as his on-field brilliance.
