Ex-Mets outfielder dunks on old team after overnight trade

The Mets traded for outfielder Luis Robert Jr. on Tuesday night.

The Mets upgraded their outfield Tuesday night by acquiring center fielder Luis Robert Jr. from the White Sox, but one glaring defensive gap remains.

President of baseball operations David Stearns has yet to really address the starting rotation this offseason, which has drawn the ire of former outfielder Cameron Maybin.

While listing that the Mets have added Bo Bichette, Marcus Semien, Jorge Polanco and Robert, a post on X from FanDuel asked “Who is stopping them?”

Maybin replied, “They can’t pitch.”

As of right now, the Mets’ 2026 rotation is projected to feature Nolan McLean, David Peterson, Clay Holmes, Sean Manaea and Kodai Senga. Adding top-end arm was a priority entering this offseason. But they haven’t done it, yet.

The Mets have been linked to Brewers ace Freddy Peralta, who could be on the move this offseason. According to The Athletic, he’s also drawing interest from the Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Mets sent infielder Luisangel Acuna and right-hander Truman Pauley to Chicago in exchange for Robert.

Robert was at the center of a lot of trade speculation at last season’s deadline, but no deal came together.

The 28-year-old was heavily linked to the Mets, but according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the two sides “never got close” on a deal.

Robert didn’t have a stellar 2025 season, hitting .223/.297/.364 with 14 home runs and 53 RBI. But he added 33 stolen bases over 110 games.

Robert came up through the White Sox’s organization and was an All-Star selection in 2023, when he hit 38 home runs in his best offensive season.
