Tuesday Big Ten Recap: UCLA Shocks Purdue

Recap all the Big Ten action from Tuesday.

The Big Ten had five games on Tuesday night, highlighted by road trips for Michigan State and Purdue. While the Spartans took care of business out west, the Boilers fell flat.

Let’s take a look at what happened.

Game of the Night:

UCLA Bruins 69, No. 4 Purdue Boilermakers 67

These two entered Tuesday night’s meeting in drastically different places. While Purdue had won nine straight and sat atop the Big Ten standings, UCLA was coming off a disappointing loss to Ohio State over the weekend and had fallen in three of the team’s previous five games. Notably, UCLA also entered the evening without a win against a top 50 opponent. Add in some traditional complaining from head coach Mick Cronin and the energy surrounding the two programs couldn’t have been that much different.

However, none of that mattered on Tuesday.

In a classic example of the unpredictability of college basketball, UCLA not only defied expectations, but ended up shocking the Boilers with some huge plays in the closing minutes to get the win. Donovan Dent was fantastic in the game, finishing with 23 points and 13 assists. Tyler Bilodeau also went to work with 14 points and four rebounds. It was truly a great game, with the momentum swinging repeatedly in the second half.

For UCLA, it’s hard to understate the significance of this one. The Bruins desperately needed a quality win, after going the first two and a half months of the season without a win against a top 50 team, and this one certainly fits the bill. Purdue is clearly one of the top teams in the league and will be vying for a top eight seed on Selection Sunday. Upsetting a team like that will be huge for UCLA’s postseason hopes, as the group continues to hang around the bubble. UCLA now sits at 13-6 overall and 5-3 in Big Ten play with the win.

On the other side, Purdue fell to 17-2 overall and 7-1 in Big Ten play with the loss. It snapped a nine-game winning streak that dated back to December 6th and certainly took some wind out of fans’ sails. However, fans shouldn’t overreact to a single misstep. Winning on the road in the Big Ten is always difficult, particularly when a team is traveling multiple time zones. As long as this doesn’t carry over into other games, Purdue should be just fine.

UCLA will now hope to keep things rolling on Saturday at home against Northwestern. Purdue will hope to get back on track at home against Illinois on Saturday.

The Rest:

Iowa Hawkeyes 68, Rutgers Scarlet Knights 62

The Hawkeyes took care of business in this one, beating a resurgent Rutgers squad at home in a relatively competitive game. Bennett Stirtz led the way with 20 points, five assists, and four rebounds. Tate Sage also had 17 points. Iowa improved to 14-5 overall and 4-4 in Big Ten play with the win, while Rutgers fell to 9-10 overall and 2-6 in Big Ten play with the loss. The Hawkeyes will now get a week off before facing off against USC at home on January 28th. Rutgers will try and bounce back against Indiana at home on Friday.

No. 3 Michigan Wolverines 86, Indiana Hoosiers 72

This one largely went according to script, with Michigan handling an overmatched Indiana at home. The Hoosiers were able to get things close-ish around halftime, but never led in the evening. The margin was also a bit deceiving thanks to some late game scoring by Indiana. Yaxel Lendeborg led the way for Michigan with 15 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Elliot Cadeau also had 19 points and four rebounds.

Michigan improved to 17-1 overall and 7-1 in Big Ten play with the win, while Indiana fell to 12-7 overall and 3-5 in Big Ten play with the loss. The Wolverines will now prepare for arch-rival Ohio State at home on Friday night. Indiana will get Rutgers on the road on Friday.

No. 10 Michigan State Spartans 68, Oregon Ducks 52

For the second straight game, a short-handed Oregon team faced off against a team from Michigan. And things largely went the same as the first go around, with the Ducks playing hard and putting some fear into the opponent, only to fall apart down the stretch and fall by double-digits. Carson Cooper proved to be the difference for the Spartans, finishing with 19 points and seven rebounds. Coen Carr also had 15 points and eight rebounds.

Michigan State improved to 17-2 overall and 7-1 in Big Ten play with the win, while Oregon fell to 8-11 overall and 1-7 in Big Ten play with the loss. The Spartans will now return home to face off against Maryland on Saturday. Oregon will try and snap its five-game skid against rival Washington on the road on Sunday.

Ohio State Buckeyes 82, Minnesota Golden Gophers 74 (OT)

This one didn’t look particularly great heading into tip, but it ended up being a great game, with the teams exchanging leads in the second half and needing overtime to settle things. Fortunately for Buckeye fans, John Mobley came to play, finishing with 26 points and three rebounds. Bruce Thornton also had 23 points and seven rebounds in the win.

Ohio State improved to 13-5 overall and 5-3 in Big Ten play with the win, while Minnesota fell to 10-9 overall and 3-5 in Big Ten play with the loss. The Bucks will now prepare for arch-rival Michigan on the road on Friday. The Gophers will get a presently undefeated Nebraska at home on Saturday.
