MANHATTAN (KSNT) – It was a dramatic race to the finish.
The K-State Wildcats (10-9, 1-5 Big 12) snapped a five-game losing to clinch their first conference win over the Utah Utes (9-10, 1-5 Big 12), 81-78.
P.J. Haggerty had a big night for the ‘Cats scoring 34 points, 28 of those coming in the second half. Utah’s Terrence Brown had 33 points.
As a team, the Wildcats shot 50% on field goals and 52% from three, including 10 made threes in the first half.
Kansas State had just a three-point lead heading into the half.
Up 79-77 and with 19 seconds remaining in the second, Haggerty made a late turnover.
A late foul on Utah’s Don McHenry gave the Utes the opportunity to tie the game, but McHenry missed the first free throw.
Two made free throws from Nate Johnson would seal the victory for the Wildcats, giving them their first victory since Dec. 28 over ULM.
K-State will now redirect its attention to round one of the Sunflower Showdown on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
