Corner Canyon hires former defensive coordinator Casey Sutera as new head football coach

Corner Canyon High School didn’t have to look far to find its new football coach.

The Chargers are bringing back Casey Sutera, its old defensive coordinator, to take over for Eric Kjar who departed last month to be the new Weber State head coach.

Sutera was the defensive coordinator at Corner Canyon from 2017 to 2021, helping the program win three straight state championships from 2018-20. Prior to that he was the defensive coordinator for five years under Kjar at Jordan High.

Sutera has spent the past four seasons as Brighton High’s head coach, leading to program to a 35-14 record during the stretch and back-to-back semifinal appearances in 2024 and 2025.

During his time at Brighton, Sutera’s teams made incremental steps in the playoffs going from the second round to the quarterfinals and then the semifinals the past two years.

The success played out kind of like he thought, as Sutera let the methodical process play out.

“If I learned anything from coach (Kjar), it’s the process shines through,” said Sutera. “I think more mentality than Xs and Os, what are those little mentality things that will take us to the next step to where we’re going to start winning playoff games and playing deep into November.”

That’s exactly what he did in four seasons, an impressive accomplishment at a school that hasn’t won a state championship since 1982.

The expectations at Corner Canyon will be much, much higher as the program has won six of the past eight state championships under Kjar.

Kjar was the offensive mastermind during his time with the Chargers, with Sutera as his defensive mastermind during three of those titles.

Who Sutera brings in as his offensive coordinator will go a long way in determining if Corner Canyon picks up right where it left off in 2026, or if there’s a dip that levels the playing field in 6A again.

Sutera is a graduate of Murray High School. He played defensive end in college for two years at Southern Utah University and then walked onto the University of Utah in 2005. He eventually earned a scholarship and played in the 2006 Armed Forces Bowl and the 2007 Poinsettia Bowl.
