The final session of the Panini Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts, delivered in a big way as three teams ranked in The Sporting News High School Boys Basketball Top 25 all fell in upsets to bring the event to a close.
No. 7 Dynamic Prep [Irving, TX] pulled a minor upset of the No. 4 Prolific Prep [Fort Lauderdale, FL] Crew, 78-66, in the early action, which followed an upset in the first game of the day when the Newman National [Boston, MA] Cardinals upset the Southeastern Prep Academy National [Orlando, FL] Falcons, 67-60. Southeastern Prep entered the contest unranked but has spent time in the national Top 25 this season and was still ranked among the nation's Top 50 teams heading into the Hoophall event.
Later in the day, the unranked St. John Bosco [Bellflower, CA] Braves took down the No. 23 Columbus [Miami, FL] Explorers, 65-56, and then No. 10 SPIRE Academy [Geneva, OH] brought the event to a close with a 60-47 win over the No. 2 Brewster Academy [Wolfeboro, NH] Bobcats.
The results will shake up the next edition of SN's Top 25 with SPIRE Academy even, possibly, making a bid for the No. 1 position in the country. The Ohioans also have a 72-50 win over the current No. 1 AZ Compass Prep National [Chandler, AZ] Dragons back on January 2 boosting their case.
