How long Scottie Scheffler can keep this going is one of the main storylines heading into 2026.
Scheffler’s 2025 season brought back memories of Tiger Woods’ prime, with six wins including two majors. He now only needs a US Open title to complete the career Grand Slam, following Rory McIlroy, who did it at Augusta just a year earlier.
The world number one often gets frustrated by comparisons to Woods, but those will stick as long as he keeps up this level of play. If he backs up his 2025 season with another similar year, he will be firmly in the conversation among the game’s all-time greats.
Speaking before Scheffler’s 2026 debut at The American Express – a tournament still missing from his CV – Golf Channel’s Rex Hoggard shared how many times he thinks the world number one will win this year.
Rex Hoggard predicts Scottie Scheffler’s win total for 2026
Scheffler, who currently holds 19 PGA Tour victories, is expected by Hoggard to add several more by the end of the year.
During an appearance on the Golf Channel podcast, Hoggard estimated that the 29-year-old could win around six events in 2026.
He explained where he thinks the betting line should be set, saying: “Five and a half somewhere around there. Maybe six and a half. I guess it depends on where the betting would come in.
“But I think it’s safe to say when you look at what he can possibly accomplish later this summer, certainly at the US Open with the Grand Slam on the line.
“And I’m just going to start with the American Express. I don’t know. I was a little surprised when I looked up his record that he’s played the American Express five times, and he’s never won it.
“And it’s just kind of getting to the point now where it is shocking when a player of that calibre has that many starts on that particular golf course, where you would think, yeah, it suits his skill set like everything he needs to do.
“Well, he doesn’t like making a bunch of birdies, and that’s kind of what the AMX is. It’s a bit of a birdie fest, and it always has been. So maybe that throws him off a little bit.
“It will be interesting to watch him starting the season this year because of what we came off of last year, because of the injury and everything that set him back last year, and how much time it took him to get back to full strength.
“I don’t think we’re going to see that. My guess is he spent this off-season two things: staying away from wine glasses and cutting pasta, making homemade pasta, and spending a lot of time on the range with Randy Smith working on his game.”
What Scottie Scheffler’s American Express record looks like
Scheffler missed The American Express last year, and his previous results don’t exactly suggest he is likely to start 2026 with a win at PGA West.
His best finish came in his tournament debut back in 2020 when he placed third at 23 under, though a final-round 70 took him out of the running late on Sunday.
He then missed the cut in 2021 after rounds of 70 and 71 left him three under – well short of what’s needed on such a low-scoring layout. His most recent appearance came in 2024 when he finished T17.
PGA West tends to be one of the easier stops on tour, which means Scheffler’s usual advantages do not always stand out here. Still, given how well he played throughout last season, it would not be wise to overlook him entirely.
A win this early would also be a good sign compared to last year when he had an injury setback at the start of the season.
