Despair is a big factor in ACC Basketball and for some teams, it’s creeping closer.
In Tuesday’s ACC Action, NC State treks down to Clemson, Florida State is off to Miami and SMU visits Wake Forest.
We started to say that Will Wade was making his first trip to Clemson, but of course he went to school there and started his coaching career there as well.
It’s not like he’s going to Littlejohn without knowing that it’s a pit. He knows exactly what Littlejohn is.
That said, State has been up and down and Wade is frustrated. Clemson has been playing really well so it’s hard to bet against them at home, but State needs to get an impressive win to make up for losing to Georgia Tech on Saturday.
Side note: Wade beat Clemson when he was at McNeese in last year’s NCAA Tournament.
Incidentally, Clemson fans have taken to calling Carter Welling “the Mormon Missile.” He says he doesn’t mind and actually sounds kind of flattered.
FSU probably is going to Miami at the wrong time. The ‘Canes took a beating at Clemson last time out and they’re going to want to take some frustrations out on somebody and the ‘Noles are a handy target.
Both coaches are new of course, but Jai Lucas had an easier time recruiting in his first season. Luke Loucks has done a decent job at Florida State, but that’s going to take some time. Miami is heavily favored and should be. They’re much more talented than FSU.
SMU is visiting Wake but the Mustangs are much more talented and unlike the Demon Deacons, they have a reliable inside game. Wake has three players who can be counted on in Juke Harris, Myles Colvin and Nate Calmese, and Tre’Von Spillers has had his moments. But we can’t see Omaha Biliew and Cooper Schweiger keeping up with Samet Yigitoglu and Jaden Toombs.
By the way, this will also mark Boopie Miller’s return to Joel. No one ever said this directly, but we got the distinct sense that the Wake staff sort of gave up on Miller. If so, in retrospect, it was a big mistake.
At UNC, aside from the Hubert Davis drama, the university is trying to decide whether to stay in the Dean Dome and renovate or build a fancy new barn which might be off campus.
Davis and some other prominent alums have come out firmly for renovating and now you can add Ol’ Roy Williams to that camp.
In this video, Williams invokes the father figure of Dean Smith, saying that Smith always wanted an on-campus arena. Smith’s aura is fading a bit, but Williams still carries some weight. Mission accomplished?
Maybe. We’ll see.
