According to ESPN’s league insider, Adam Schefter, the Denver Broncos are opening the practice window for running back JK Dobbins. He suffered a foot/Lisfranc injury that was considered season-ending at the time, with an outside chance of a return if the Broncos reached the Super Bowl or maybe the AFC Championship Game.
Well, the Broncos are in the AFC Championship Gam,e and Dobbins will be returning to practice. The question is, will the veteran running back show enough this week to prove to the Broncos coaches and medical team that he can play this Sunday?
Dobbins has been sidelined ever since suffering this foot injury back in Week 10 during their Thursday Night victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. It was later deemed a dreaded Lisfranc injury, and that his season was over with an outside chance of returning for the Super Bowl or maybe the AFC Championship Game. Lisfranc injuries often carry a lengthy recovery time, so hopefully, with Dobbins returning to practice this week, it means it was a lower-grade injury. With that said, I am no doctor and just spitballing here.
If Dobbins can return this Sunday and be close to 100%, it will be a huge boost to the Broncos’ offense. They have struggled to get things going consistently on the ground ever since he went down with the injury, and now, with Bo Nix out with an injury, they need a strong run game more than ever. Jarrett Stidham will be making his first start since the finale of the 2023 season, so having a run game to lean on will make life a little bit easier for him.
However, Dobbins needs to be activated off the injured reserve first. There is no guarantee that he will be ready for Sunday’s AFC Championship Game, and this could be incase the Broncos advance to the Super Bowl. Until we hear from head coach Sean Payton, we have to wait and see on that.
This is optimistic news at the very least, and hopefully, Dobbins shows enough this week and is able to return in some capacity for Sunday’s AFC Championship Game vs. the Patriots.
