After numerous scenes of chaos in the stands, tensions also flared on the edge of the pitch. A bizarre altercation broke out over Edouard Mendy’s now-famous towel. Repeatedly snatched away by young ball boys, the towel had to be guarded by Yehvann Diouf.
While his team was battling through extra time, Yehvann Diouf spent all 30 minutes protecting that towel, sometimes circling the pitch just to keep the persistent ball boys at bay. In the dying moments, with Morocco pushing hard for an equalizer, Diouf was forced onto the field to defend the towel. In the end, the ball boys dragged him out of the penalty area in a dramatic scene.
