The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations concluded on January 18 with the final in Rabat.
Host nation Morocco took on Senegal for the right to lift the trophy, a day after Nigeria claimed the bronze medal by beating Egypt on penalties in the third-place playoff game.
Morocco were desperate to end their long wait to win the AFCON, especially in front of their home fans. Senegal have a greater recent pedigree when it comes to Africa's top tournament, but they too were hoping for final success that has eluded them all too often in the past.

Who won AFCON 2025?
Senegal won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations by beating Morocco 1-0 in the final.
Pape Gueye struck a stunning winning goal in extra time to secure a second AFCON title for the Lions of Teranga. It was the first time they had scored in the final of the tournament.
Senegal's win came after extraordinary scenes at the end of normal time. Deep into second-half stoppage time, Morocco were awarded a penalty following a VAR check for a foul on Brahim Diaz, which prompted Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw to order his players from the pitch in protest. Eventually, they returned to the field, only for Edouard Mendy to save Diaz's Panenka attempt from the spot.

Egypt have been the dominant nation in Africa Cup of Nations history with The Pharaohs winning seven titles including the first edition of the competition back in 1957.
