The major season is over, and PGA Tour golf returns this week to TPC Twin Cities for the 3M Open. However, the start of the event has been anything but smooth. A rash of early withdrawals forced the tournament to fill spots with sponsor exemptions.

Further on Thursday, officials announced they would institute preferred lies due to heavy rainfall on Wednesday, allowing players to improve unplayable or difficult lies without penalty.

The event took another hit when 28‑year‑old Philip Knowles had to withdraw after suffering a neck injury. Knowles was last in action at the John Deere Classic, where he tied for 41st at 9‑under.

His withdrawal opened a spot for Ryan Brehm, who has been inactive all season. The 39‑year‑old has played in 150 PGA Tour events and owns a victory at the 2022 Puerto Rico Open. After such a long absence, this could be a golden opportunity for him.

On Wednesday, Anders Albertson also withdrew, giving way to Zac Blair. Blair has struggled this year, missing seven cuts in 13 starts.

Despite these late changes, the field still features plenty of talent. Chris Gotterup — fresh off a Scottish Open win and an impressive showing at The Open — tees off on Thursday.

The draw also includes Rickie Fowler, Sam Burns, Max Homa and others, all eager to climb the FedExCup standings with strong finishes.
