DC Jim Schwartz to Browns head coach? What to make of swirling rumors

Rumors have swirled that the Cleveland Browns head coach search will end with DC Jim Schwartz getting the job

In professional sports, rumors are common. Oftentimes, rumors are debunked instantly by credible sources. There is an old saying, “When there is smoke, there is fire.” If signs are there that the rumor has some form of credibility behind it, it’s more than likely that something is there. For the Cleveland Browns, a team that is searching for its next head coach, the leaks are starting to trickle out.

Multiple interviews with candidates, from internal to outside candidates, the team is doing their due diligence to find the right person for the right job. Only DC Jim Schwartz has reportedly been set for a second interview, despite history saying elevating a coordinator on your own team is a bad idea.

The Browns are putting in the work on their coaching search:

The second interview being set up has led to speculation that Schwartz could end up as the main man in charge of the Browns in 2026.

Three things can be said about these rumors:

  • This can be a strategy by Schwartz’s PR to gain legitimacy for him as a potential HC in 2026.
    • Schwartz has also interviewed with the Baltimore Ravens
  • Someone has legit knowledge on the situation, and that Schwartz is the leader for the job
  • Path of least resistance” decision

From an outsider’s point of view, it’s 50/50 whether Schwartz becomes the HC of the Browns, but those who follow the team closely know for sure it’s not the case here. During the season, many Browns fans wanted the team to fire former head coach Kevin Stefanski and make Schwartz the interim, but that never materialized due to the fact that the team had respect for Stefanski.

Schwartz has a history of being a head coach, but the argument can be made that he’s better suited as a coordinator than a head coach. This shouldn’t be considered a knock against Schwartz, but there is a reason why he hasn’t gotten any coaching interviews in the last couple of seasons despite leading an elite defense in Cleveland. If Schwartz doesn’t get the head coaching gig, he could stay in Cleveland, and it has been reported that the team doesn’t want to let him leave the building.

For now, the rumors behind Schwartz being the head coach of the team seem more like smoke, but with a little substance behind it.
