Miami will be down a starter on one side of the ball, but could get a starter back on the other side.
We’re back with the injury report for the College Football Playoff National Championship Game between Miami and Indiana.
Miami Head Coach Mario Cristobal was asked about injury updates during his standard weekly presser. In that presser he gave some good updates, but hinted at a player missing this game that’s now been confirmed.
The initial report came out Friday night at 8:10pm. And with no further ado:
There are a couple of big items here.
First, TE Elija Lofton is out for the National Championship Game. One of Miami’s starters at the position. Lofton’s last play of the year was a catch over the middle against Ole Miss where he took a huge hit from a Safety. He was reportedly seen throwing up blood on the sidelines after the hit, and did not return tot he Semifinal game. This is the play:
Next, CB Damari Brown and DE Cole McConathy II are both questionable. Brown had been in a walking boot for several weeks and missed all 3 of the previous CFP games, but returned to practice last week, and continues to practice week as he fights to return to game action. With Xavier Lucas out for a half, and OJ Frederique having missed a large part of the semifinals with an undisclosed injury, Brown’s return to the CB rotation would be a welcomed sight.
Also, DE Cole McConathy II is questionable after being out for multiple weeks. He was a a rotation DE as a true freshman and is redshirting this year, but with the ability for players to maintain their redshirts and play in postseason games, McConathy could return and see time in the game against Indiana, if needed.
LB Malik Bryant and WR Daylyn Upshaw are both out for the year. Donta Simpson has transferred to Missouri and is no longer part of this roster.
Indiana has players listed as out, but their star players and core of their team is healthy. Expect them to play like it on Monday night.
We are deep into the CFP season, so everybody is dinged up to some extent. We’ll have updates we move toward Monday night.
The Miami Hurricanes face the Indiana Hoosiers in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game at 7:30pm Eastern on Monday night. The game will be televised on ESPN, and the remaining suite of ESPN channels for secondary broadcasts as well.
