Desmond Claude says comeback attempt made ankle/knee injury worse

Guard Desmond Claude, who played his first two college seasons for Xavier, has averaged 13.3 points per game in 12 games this season for Washington.

Washington Huskies guard Desmond Claude, who played his first two college seasons for the Xavier Musketeers, announced via Twitter/X that he's stepping away from on-court activities to prioritize his health.

Claude has averaged 13.3 points per game in the 12 games he's played this season for Washington. He averaged 4.7 points in 35 games as a freshman for Xavier, and 16.6 points in 34 games for XU as a sophomore.

Claude played for Southern Cal as a junior, averaging 15.8 points per game.

"As previously reported, during preseason practice I suffered a Grade 3 ankle sprain resulting in two completely torn ligaments in my ankle as well as identifying a third partially torn ligament," Claude tweeted. "After meeting with multiple doctors for a diagnosis and recovery timeline, I was informed that it would be at least a 12-week timeline to a potential full recovery."

Claude added that he and the basketball staff collaboratively decided to attempt to come back after five weeks of aggressive physical therapy.

"While my recovery initially seemed to exceed expectations over the past several weeks, I've been playing through unbearable pain, swelling and have also suffered a subsequent additional injury to my knee," Claude continued. "Therefore, I've met with my coaching staff to inform them that due to ongoing complications from that injury, I must step away."

Claude thanked Husky Nation for "understanding during this tough time as I prioritize my road to a full recovery."
