From Big Sky star to hometown coach: Kevin Thomson takes Auburn football job

Auburn High School’s new football coach knows a thing or two about making plays. Kevin Thomson, who replaces Aaron Chantler, was the Big Sky offensive player of the year as a quarterback at Sacramento State in 2019.

Thomson, who was a dual-threat quarterback in college, totaled 3,835 yards of offense and a single-season record 39 touchdowns that season before signing with UW as a graduate student, then moving on to play in the Canadian Football League and United States Football League.

Thomson was the quarterbacks coach at Eastside Catholic in the 2025 season.

“Auburn High School is thrilled about what Coach Thomson brings to Auburn High School and we are looking forward to many successful seasons of Trojan Football to come under Coach Thomson’s leadership,” Auburn athletic director Jon Price wrote in a statement.

Thomson grew up in Auburn and graduated from Auburn Riverside High School in 2014. He earned 4A SPSL North MVP honors and was named to The News Tribune’s 2013 All-Area team as a senior, when he racked up 2,132 yards of total offense and 24 touchdowns, leading the team’s turnaround from a 1-9 season in the year prior.

“There is a passion for football, student athlete development, and character building inside Coach Thomson that Auburn High School is motivated to share with our student athletes and the Auburn community,” Price wrote in the statement.

Auburn posted a 3-7 record last season with a 2-5 mark in the 4A North Puget Sound League.
