DEWITT, Mich. (WLNS) — DeWitt girls basketball is off to 8-1 start and coming off a win over Haslett, in which the Panthers handed the Vikings their first loss of the season and making Dewitt our Team of the week.
In their game on Tuesday with Haslett, DeWitt kept a slim lead going into the 4th quarter but DeWitt would catch fire from three-point range extending that lead and helping them pull away late. Many of those three’s came from Jaynie English who combined with her twin Jessie English for 27 points.
DeWitt head coach Bill McCullen said his teams three-point shot really helped down the stretch when Haslett got within one possession.
“My assistants told me that our three-point percentage was better than our two-point percentage and I believe it because we missed some moneys around the basket at times but those were timely and it was a bunch of different people,” explained McCullen.
Going into this season, DeWitt lost a lot of talent from last season but the now upperclassmen were ready to continue the winning tradition of their program and make sure the team didn’t lose a step.
“Losing a lot of seniors, it was hard but we also came in have a lot of underclassmen that are filling spots and they always come to practice and work hard and always makes the extra pass,” said Jaynie. “Everyone plays their role and I think that’s what helps us most.”
Jaynie’s sister Jessie echoed those sentiments, knowing the underclassmen would need to take what they learned last year and apply that to this year’s team in order to help DeWitt be successful.
“There’s a lot to accomplish with this group specifically, we all play good together,” said Jessie. “We are finding and making the extra pass and we just play really well as a team which is a huge part of how we get those wins.”
Next up for DeWitt is a matchup on the road at Lansing Waverly on June 16th at 7:00p.m.
