If you watched the broadcast for this game you would be WELL aware that Hannah Hidalgo is the key player for Notre Dame. However, choosing the key player for Louisville is a little trickier because each game somebody seems to step up to be the star. That is the secret to success for this team, and it was on full display tonight.
The big star of this game for the Cards was Reyna Scott. She came off the bench to score a career-high 20 points and provide a steadying presence at the guard position. Notre Dame made a few runs to close the gap but Reyna and company were unflappable and never let the Irish reclaim the lead. Coach Walz said, “I thought Reyna Scott was fantastic today. Off the bounce we really put them in some ball screen situations that really caused some problems for them and she exploited them. Just a really nice job of finishing around the rim.”
Tajianna Roberts had 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Mackenly Randolph had 10 points and 7 rebounds. Elif Istanbulluoglu returned from her illness to score 11 points.
Coach Walz said, “Great team effort tonight. Really, really pleased and proud of them. It’s one of the things that makes our team good we can adjust and play different styles, Tonight they went small a lot, but we were still able to play our bigs…. In the second half we were able to mix things up.” He added that in the 4th quarter they cut it to seven and then “Boom we hit a three and got it back to 10…. We weathered their runs and I thought defensively in the 4th we did a really nice job. We were up 8 or 9 and we’re making them use the entire shot clock to run their offense. Even if they score they’ve just taken 30 seconds. So overall I thought we did a really nice job.”
On Hannah Hidalgo he said, “My main focus today was hey whoever Hannah Hidalgo is guarding get off the ball. They told me in the press room that she’s only three games in her career where she’s had less than 2 steals and two of them have been against us. I’ve never claimed to be smartest in the world but I’m surely not stupid so why would you want the person she’s guarding bringing the ball up the floor? I mean the kid leads the country in steals.”
The Cards stay on the road and head to NC State on Sunday. The game is at 1PM and can be seen on ESPN2.
