Braves lose pitcher José Suarez on waivers

Atlanta loses a depth option to Baltimore.

The Atlanta Braves lost left-handed pitcher José Suarez on waivers to the Baltimore Orioles. Suarez, 28, was a depth option for the Braves as a long-reliever and spot-starter.

Atlanta traded for Suarez at the end of last year’s Spring Training in what was essentially a swap of two out-of-option pitchers, with Suarez coming to the Braves and Ian Anderson going to the Los Angeles Angels. Anderson ended up returning to the Braves organization but didn’t appear at the big league level with Atlanta.

Suarez pitched in seven games for Atlanta last season and made one start with a below average strikeout rate and an above average walk rate. Atlanta designated him for assignment last April but he went unclaimed. He pitched in the minors until Atlanta recalled him in early September.

He has pitched in 106 games and has made 62 starts since debuting in 2019 with a 5.30 ERA and 4.69 FIP.

The Orioles making the claim on Suarez continues trend of the Braves and O’s claiming each others pitchers. Atlanta claimed pitcher George Soriano from Baltimore last week and the teams have swapped five other waiver claims since mid-September.
