With the January window now in full swing, Liverpool appear to be ramping up their transfer activity and have beaten Inter Milan to the signing of a young talent who’s been turning plenty of heads.
Mor Talla Ndiaye’s move to Liverpool was made official last week, and there were also reports that another young centre-back was expected to follow him to Anfield.
This second deal didn’t come as easily, though, with other clubs trying to step in and change Liverpool’s plans. While most of the attention will naturally be on possible first-team signings this month, the club is clearly putting effort into future planning behind the scenes.
Inter Milan miss out on Ifeanyi Ndukwe as Liverpool wrap up deal
Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe have been linked together throughout January, with both seen as the kind of high-upside prospects who could play a big role for the club in the coming years.
Liverpool had already struck a deal with Ndukwe ahead of the summer window, but fresh reports indicate Inter were still making a push to bring him to Italy before he finalised his decision to join Liverpool.
The Liverpool Echo reported: “It’s understood Liverpool fended off interest from Serie A giants Inter to land the centre-back in a deal that will be worth around £2.5m.”
The fact that another major European club was also interested speaks volumes about how highly regarded he is.
With few other transfer plans — so far, anyway — it would have been disappointing to miss out on one of their only real targets. Luckily, Ndukwe chose Liverpool and will join up with the Under-21s next season.
Along with Ndiaye, Liverpool believe they have signed two superstars who will shore up the future of Arne Slot’s defence.
Liverpool aren’t finished with their transfer window yet
We know there’s more work to do on the outgoings front this month. Juventus are going after Federico Chiesa with intent, hoping to bring him back to Turin before the window shuts.
But the Reds must have more planned in terms of signings. Looking around the Premier League, top teams are strengthening for a push to May, while FSG look to be sitting on their hands.
Liverpool need experienced centre-backs who can come into the side now, not ones who will be slowly phased in over the coming years.
