Barcelona are set to return to Copa del Rey action in high spirits, just days after their emphatic triumph over Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final.

The timing could hardly be better for the Catalan side, especially with Los Blancos crashing out of the Copa del Rey the previous night.

With confidence high and a demanding schedule ahead, rotation is firmly on the agenda as Barcelona prepare to face Racing Santander in the round of 16.

According to a report from MARCA, one of the more intriguing decisions could come at right-back.

The report claims that Marc Casado is emerging as a genuine option to start the match in a defensive role that is not his natural position.

With squad management a priority, several regular starters are expected to be given a breather.

Players such as Eric Garcia, Jules Kounde, Fermin Lopez and Raphinha are all candidates to be rested for this fixture. Their absence would leave a clear opening on the right side of defence, forcing the coaching staff to think creatively.

A temporary option

Casado, despite being more comfortable in midfield, has previous experience filling in at full-back, making him a practical short-term solution.

Casado is known for his positional intelligence and work rate, qualities that can be crucial in a role that demands defensive focus rather than attacking flair.

Against a side like Racing Santander, Barcelona are expected to dominate possession, which could further reduce the risks associated with playing a non-specialist in defence.

Meanwhile, there is also growing anticipation around the possible involvement of Joao Cancelo.

Ready for the second debut

The January signing is edging closer to full match fitness, and his return is being handled carefully by the manager.

Speaking ahead of the game, Hansi Flick addressed Cancelo’s situation and made it clear that minutes are being considered.

Providing context on the Portuguese defender’s readiness, Flick said: “Cancelo could play a few minutes. It’s something we have in mind.”

As a result, Cancelo is unlikely to be rushed into action from the first whistle. That scenario strengthens the case for Casado to take on the defensive responsibilities early in the game.
