Rangers Announcer Blasts ‘Itinerant’ Athletics Amid Controversial Relocation

We don't expect anyone to let up on the A's anytime soon.

Both Major League Baseball and the club previously known as the Oakland Athletics envision that, at some point within the coming years, the A’s will officially play in Las Vegas.

For now, the A’s are stuck in Sacramento, and Texas Rangers announcer Dave Raymond isn’t too pleased.

The A’s have come under fire all season for playing their home games at Sutter Health Park, a minor league stadium which seats just over 14,000 people. A’s pitcher Luis Severino all but publicly requested a trade after only three months pitching in Sacramento — and, by the way, don’t bother calling them the Sacramento Athletics. The A’s have controversially stayed away from any and all references to Sacramento in their branding.

For all intents and purposes, the Athletics are a team without a country. Raymond noted as much during this week, accidentally referencing Oakland during Monday’s and Tuesday’s broadcasts.

Raymond went one step further, calling them the “Wandering Athletics” on Monday and the “Itinerant Athletics” last night. For the unfamiliar, “itinerant” means traveling from place to place. For example, Kansas City Royals veteran Rich Hill is an itinerant pitcher, seeing as he’s pitched for a record 14 teams.

Raymond’s comments come only months after slamming A’s management in April, questioning why the Athletics refused to adopt “Sacramento” in their name temporarily.

“You’re not good enough for us, but we’ll let you house us for a couple of years,” Raymond said then. “But we’re not going to use your name. What?

“Why can’t they just be the Sacramento A’s for a couple of years?” Raymond continued. “What does that hurt? It’s just dismissive.”

Unfortunately for Raymond, it may be a bit before he calls an Athletics game in Las Vegas. Although the A’s new stadium is proposed to open in 2028, there is no official timetable as of publication.
