Bedford spoils Monroe Hall of Fame celebration with a sweep of girls and boys basketball games.
MONROE – Monroe was celebrating some of the greatest athletes in school history during its 16th annual Hall of Fame night.
Arch-rival Bedford spoiled the party by sweeping both the boys and the girls games on Friday, Jan. 9.
Bedford’s boys nursed an 11-9 lead into halftime, but exploded for 24 points in the third quarter and 43 in the second half to pull away for a 54-29 victory.
“We were able to put some pressure on them defensively in the third quarter to get our offense going and ended up with 20 steals in the game,” Bedford coach Nick Brillhard said. “It was a total team defensive effort tonight.”
Ish Hakki scored all of his 13 points after the intermission and Luke Whetstone added 12 points for the 6-5 Mules.
Jalen Phillips led 2-8 Monroe with 9 points.
The girls’ game also was tight at the half with Bedford up 19-15.
The Mules used defense to turn the tide in a 45-20 win.
Senior Kaitlyn Kwiatkowski and her sophomore sister Maddy Kwiatkowski combined for just one basket and 5 points, but were instrumental in the Bedford victory.
“The Kwiatkowski sisters got us going defensively,” Bedford coach Bill Ryan said.
The Mules allowed just five points in the second half.
Anna Gray poured in a career-high 26 points to lead the offense for 3-3 Bedford.
“We’re figuring out how all the puzzle pieces go together,” Ryan said.
Jennah Cadle scored 10 points for 2-6 Monroe.
“We’re making progress,” Monroe coach Kara Wilson said. “We are a lot less mechanical.”
BOYS
Erie Mason 43, Summerfield 36
PETERSBURG – Erie Mason secured its biggest win under new coach Isaac Skaggs by bouncing back after scoring just 9 points in the first half.
“We got the big win we’ve been looking tonight in a defensive battle,” Skaggs said. “Summerfield didn’t make anything easy, but we were able to make enough plays down the stretch to get it done.”
Anderson Moore produced a career-high 20 points including a free throw that closed out the win. Maddix Wise and Blake Herrera led the defense for the 6-5 Eagles.
Brody St. John scored 17 points and Rylee Schiffler tossed in 12 for Summerfield (7-4).“We had a second half collapse tonight after playing the best defense of all year in the first half,” Summerfield coach Phil Schiffler said.
Huron 63, SMCC 40
MONROE – Zennon Grant drilled seven 3 points and scored a career-high 33 points for New Boston Huron.
Grand did all of his scoring in the first three quarters and connected on all of his triples in the middle two periods.
The Chiefs also got 13 points from Cole Forster in crawling over .500 at 5-4.
“This was an all-around team effort tonight,” Huron coach Ted Tackett said.
Ben Martin scored 11 points for 2-7 SMCC.
Flat Rock 66, Milan 37
FLAT ROCK – Breydan Sutherby celebrated his move into the starting lineup with a career-high 18 points for Flat Rock.
Sophomore Christian Garcia also played a key role.
“Breydan and Christian set the tone defensively,” Flat Rock coach Rick Smith said. “We had great ball pressure. We shot really well. We out-scored them 22-7 in the thirdd quarter to put the game away. It was good to see all our guys score. Our offense feeds off our defense”.
Jordan Godfrey had a balanced game with 17 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals for the 3-7 Rams.
Landon Talladay scored 14 points for Milan (2-8).
Riverview 59, Jefferson 48
Huron League leading Riverview (9-1 overall, 4-0 league).
“We played tough for three and a half quarters,” Jefferson coach Corey Wiley said. “Riverview pulled away late.”
Freshman Hunter Barton paced Jefferson (6-4) with 16 points and Trey Oldenburg dropped in 11.
Riverview 57, Airport 52
CARLETON – Airport (6-4) had to chase all night after falling behind 17-7 in the opening period.
“Our kids showed a lot of fight and had our opportunities to win it after being down most of the game,” Airport coach Ryan Marino said.
Drake Ferris came off the bench to tie Dillon Byrd and Ryan Hildebrand as the team’s leading scorer with 11 points.
Lenawee Christian 61, Whiteford 60
OTTAWA LAKE – All-Stater Jaxon Salenbien made two free throws with 2.4 seconds left to hand Whiteford its first loss of the season.
The Bobcats trailed by more than 20 points at one time, but outscored the visiting Cougars 43-28 in the second half to climb back into the game and take a lead.
“We made some adjustments at halftime and clawed our way back,” Whiteford coach Jordan Bollin said. “I credit the competitive spirit of our guys and their relentless effort in second half.”
Whiteford went up 60-59 with 19.3 seconds left with a pair of free throws by Cole Griffith.
Griffith led Whiteford (7-1) with 22 points.
Blissfield 49, Ida 48
BLISSFIELD – Luke Hennessey and Connor Zimmerman scored 11 points each, but Ida dropped to 6-4.
Adrian Madison 44, Dundee 38
DUNDEE – Some carelessness with the basketball was costly for Dundee in its seventh consecutive loss
“Another game for us where we had too many turnovers, but, outside of that, I thought we played well,” Dundee coach Larry Middleton said.
Wyatt Hickey led the 3-7 Vikings with 14 points and Luke Bishop scored 11.
State Line 80, Montclova Baptist 44
MONTCLOVA TOWNSHIP, Ohio – Jackson Baumker scored 27 points and Preston Roque tossed in 20 as State Line Christian improved to 9-3.
“Ian Hendrix continues to be a major bright spot on defense and the boards,” State Line coach Nathan Nash said. “On Tuesday he had 13 rebounds. Tonight, he had 11.”
GIRLS
Airport 61, Walled Lake Western 20
WALLED LAKE – Airport had not trouble rolling to 6-0.
It led 26-5 after one quarter and 46-7 at the half.
“The girls came to play tonight and established control of the game from the start,” said Airport assistant coach Luke Baker. “The energy and effort in our defense has allowed us to score points.”
The Jets spread the offense with Peyton Zajac and Olivia Gratz scoring 12 each and Sophia Mator 11. Katie Roecker provided a spark off the bench with 9 points
Woodhaven 34, Carlson 20
GIBRALTAR – Addison Burgei pulled down 16 rebounds, but Gibraltar Carlson suffered its second consecutive loss.
Addison Wallace collected 7 points and 10 boards for the 6-4 Marauders.
Trenton 47, Milan 31
MILAN – Emily Bladen scored 21 points, but Milan fell to 0-8.
