Seahawks’ Klint Kubiak has 1st 2 of 5 remote interviews for NFL head-coach jobs

His boss Mike Macdonald isn’t concerned his offensive coordinator is distracted from his first job: Seattle’s game plan for the playoffs.

It’s not a bye weekend off for Klint Kubiak.

The Seahawks offensive coordinator is busy doing Zoom interviews remotely for at least five NFL head-coaching jobs.

The Baltimore Ravens announced Friday they had completed their interview with Seattle’s 38-year-old play caller. That was two days after the Ravens fired John Harbaugh after his 18 years as their coach.

The Las Vegas Raiders also talked to Kubiak Friday, ESPN’s Peter Schrager reported.

Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said Kubiak was using the team’s and coach’s days off Friday and Saturday during Seattle’s bye through the wild-card round of the playoffs as the NFC’s top seed to do his interviews.

Macdonald had said earlier this week while it was “bittersweet” at potentially losing a trusted assistant who was a large reason the Seahawks scored their most points in franchise history this regular season, but that he supported Kubiak’s and any assistant coach’s advancement.

Macdonald said Friday on KJR radio the team has been Kubiak’s “absolute priority” this week.

“When it’s Seahawks time he’s been right on it” preparing an initial game play for the divisional playoff Seattle will host next weekend, Macdonald said on KJR.

Macdonald said Kubiak is looking forward to returning to sole focus on the Seahawks’ game plan when the coaches reconvene Sunday into Monday.

NFL rules allow teams with head-coaching vacancies to interview candidates on the top playoff seeds for a maximum of three hours each remotely during their first-round bye week. The interview window begins three days after that team’s regular-season finale. It ends when the weekend of wild-card playoff games end.

For Seattle, the first day teams could talk to Kubiak was Tuesday. The Seahawks then practiced and had meetings Wednesday and Thursday.

So Friday was the first day Kubiak had free from daily Seahawks duties to interview remotely. He apparently will have all five of his interviews with teams that have requested them on Friday and Saturday.

The Ravens, Raiders, Atlanta Falcons, New York Giants and division-rival Arizona Cardinals have requested permission from the Seahawks to interview Kubiak.

Also Friday, Seahawks defensive coordinator Aden Durde interviewed with the Cleveland Browns for another head-coaching opening, ESPN’s Schrager reported.

The Seahawks will found out Saturday night or Sunday which team they will play in the second round. It will be the lowest remaining seed to advance through the NFC’s wild-card games Saturday and Sunday.

If the seventh-seed Green Bay Packers (9-7-1) beat the second-seeded Bears (11-6) in Chicago Saturday night, Seattle will host Green Bay. That’s regardless of who wins Rams at Panthers Saturday afternoon and 49ers at Eagles Sunday.

Reverence for John Harbaugh

Macdonald was an assistant in Baltimore for 10 years before the Seahawks hired the then-36-year-old Macdonald in January 2024 to become the NFL’s youngest head coach. The last two of those 10 seasons in Baltimore he was Harbaugh’s coordinator of one of the league’s top defenses.

Friday to KJR Macdonald made his first public comments on the Ravens firing the man who molded Macdonald into an NFL head coach.

“I love John Harbaugh. He’s a mentor. He’s a lifetime friend,” Macdonald said.

He said their wives are close, and that he knows Harbaugh as far more than his former boss. Many of the ways Macdonald runs the Seahawks, from football Xs and Os to travel schedules, are or are adaptations from the ways Harbaugh ran the Ravens.

“It’s a little bit of a Twilight Zone,” Macdonald said.

“To me, John Harbaugh IS the Baltimore Ravens.”
