Marc-Andre ter Stegen has found himself in an unfavourable situation at FC Barcelona this season since returning from his back surgery.

With Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny firmly ahead of him in the pecking order, the German shot-stopper is staring at a situation where he would not play much, if at all, at Barça. It would, in turn, affect his World Cup hopes with the German national team.

As such, there has been a lot of speculation about a loan exit until the end of the season, with Girona showing strong interest.

Ter Stegen willing to say yes

In a major development, SPORT now reports that Ter Stegen is willing to give his approval to a potential move to Girona and would look favourably on playing at Montilivi.

The 33-year-old Barça captain has a very clear priority: to compete, accumulate minutes and remain in the national team picture with the World Cup in mind.

However, the veteran star is not prepared to force the situation or leave Barcelona at any cost. Ter Stegen does not contemplate waiving money or giving up part of his salary this season to facilitate his departure, and this is where the main obstacle to the operation lies.

Barcelona’s position

At present, Girona can only cover a very small percentage of his wages, which Barcelona consider less than ideal to allow him to leave.

From Barça’s point of view, the move makes sporting sense because, although Hansi Flick can give him occasional minutes, the overall scenario has not changed.

However, the Blaugrana demand that Girona assume around 20-25% of the goalkeeper’s salary. This is a figure that they cannot come close to at the moment, despite the departure of Dominic Livakovic, who earned just over €300,000 at Montilivi.

Given the situation, Ter Stegen, who for the first time is open to the move, is urging Girona to find a solution that would allow Barça to approve the transfer now that his “yes” to playing under Michel is assured.
