A hockey analytics conference announced, too.
A nice surprise was unveiled this week when the 2027 NHL Winter Classic was announced. The Utah Mammoth are hosting the game at Rice-Eccles Stadium, home of the University of Utah Utes in Salt Lake City. Their opponent is none other than the Colorado Avalanche, a budding rivalry regionally and on-ice.
The matchup is an easy selection for the league as each of the first three games against each other this season were one-goal victories for Colorado and the former Arizona Coyotes have always played the Avalanche tough. Expectations should be no less next year in this special match in the elements beside the Rocky mountains.
This isn’t the first appearance outdoors for the Avalanche, of course with history hosting at Coors Field, the Air Force Academy and at Lake Tahoe, but it’s their first showing in the NHL’s premier event the Winter Classic which is always held right around New Year’s Day. Special sweaters and perhaps a documentary could follow as well. It’s a special honor which is why we placed it on our holiday wishlist.
The organization has been quite busy as the Avalanche announced a hockey analytics conference at Ball Arena that the public can attend. Join the festivities on March 30 and 31, and hopefully this becomes a regular event.
In other news, former Avalanche and 2022 Stanley Cup champion defenseman Jack Johnson has announced his retirement. He recently accepted a position with the Vancouver Canucks joining their organization as a pro scout.
