Cardinals add notable NFC candidate to HC search

Every stone and rock lifted and searched

The Arizona Cardinals’ list of candidates for their head coaching search just added one more name: Green Bay Packers DC Jeff Hafley.

According to ROTB’s Managing Editor Seth Cox, the Cardinals’ list is already pretty long as he put together a comprehensive list on Wednesday. That list:

  • Seattle Seahawks: OC Klint Kubiak
  • San Francisco 49ers: DC Robert Saleh
  • Miami Dolphins: DC Anthony Weaver
  • Denver Broncos: DC Vance Joseph
  • New England Patriots: passing game coordinator Thomas Brown

Yesterday, the team added two more:

  • Kansas City Chiefs: OC Matt Nagy
  • Atlanta Falcons former HC Raheem Morris

Hafley is in his second year leading the Packers defense.

This year, Green Bay finished with the #12 overall defense, broken down into #11 against the pass and #18 in stopping the run. His group only allowed an average of 117.7 yards per game rushing.

Hefley came to Green Bay after a successful stint at Boston College as their head coach from 2020-2023. His Eagles teams went to three bowl games.

He began his coaching career in 2001 and has been employed by six college programs. He also has tenures with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an assistant defensive backs coach, his first NFL gig, the Cleveland Browns from 2014-2015 as DB coach, San Francisco 49ers as DB coach (2016-2018) before going to Ohio State, Boston College, and then the Packers.

Hafley and his wife, Gina, have two daughters.

There are some obstacles regarding Hafley. He won’t be available for interviews until the Packers are out of the playoff picture, or after the Super Bowl if they make it that far. Three teams chasing Hafley after he took Green Bay’s defense from 22nd to 12th in yards allowed tells you everything about his market value rising.

The big question seems to be if the Cardinals are going to go defense yet again with their new head coach.

The Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons have also requested to speak to Hafley.

Kansas City Chiefs OC Matt Nagy is scheduled to be interviewed on Friday, while former Falcons head coach Raheem Morris will be in Tempe next week. Denver Broncos DC has already interviewed via Zoom. All of the remaining candidates on ROTB’s list have been contacted, but no set interviews have been scheduled yet.
