Fossil Ridge boys basketball sophomore Malachi Egbuji is the Blue FCU Athlete of the Week after a perfect shooting performance in a SaberCats' win.
This week's Blue Federal Credit Union Athlete of the Week award is starting out 2026 with perfection.
Fossil Ridge boys basketball's Malachi Egbuji took top honors in the Fort Collins area for the week of Dec. 29 to Jan. 3 after a perfect shooting day.
Egbuji scored 17 points with six rebounds, helping the SaberCats beat Class 5A top-10 Severance 60-50 in the first game of the new calendar year.
The SaberCat sophomore was a perfect 8-for-8 shooting from the field and his 17 points were a new high school career high.
Egbuji also added two assists with a steal and a block in an excellent all-around game.
The Fossil forward is now averaging 15 points, five rebounds and two steals per game over the last four contests with a 3-1 team record.
As of Jan. 8, the SaberCats are 7-4 and ranked 15th in CHSAA's 6A selection and seeding index.
Egbuji is the first basketball player to win Blue FCU Athlete of the Week this winter. He's also the sixth Fossil Ridge athlete to take top honors this school year, joining Fossil softball player Briella Myers, SaberCat volleyball players Emery Johnson, Olivia Ewing and Alyssa Cottingham and swimmer Gracie Thornton.
Fossil fans hit the polls hard, pushing Egbuji above a tightly-grouped field with 24.3% of the vote.
That ultimately put the SaberCat swimming star ahead of these other four outstanding Athlete of the Week nominees:
- Ella Gaca Thiele, Fossil Ridge girls swimming (runner-up at 23.6%)
- Grady Agone, Windsor wrestling
- Robert Kendall, Windsor wrestling
- Kolby Box, PSD ice hockey
The Blue Federal Credit Union Athlete of the Week series features five nominees on Mondays, with voting at Coloradoan.com until 11:59 a.m. every Thursday.
