Trinidad Chambliss emerged as a breakout star of the 2025-26 College Football Playoff. The former Ferris State signal-caller has led the Rebels to a 2-0 playoff start, including an upset victory over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl quarterfinal.

Another fixture on the broadcasts of Ole Miss' games during the Rebels' playoff run is his mother, Cheryl. The game's cameras pan to Chambliss' mother frequently during games.

Chambliss and his mother share a special prayer ritual before each Ole Miss game, and it has become a gameday tradition for the two.

Who is Trinidad Chambliss' mom?

Trinidad Chambliss' parents are Trent and Cheryl Chambliss. His father, Trent, is an assistant principal at Wyoming High School, who also coached Trinidad in youth football. When Chreyl became pregnant with Trinidad, her second child, she and Trent agreed that if it was a girl she would pick the name, and Trent if it was a boy. Although Trinidad was named after Puerto Rican boxer Felix Trinidad, Cheryl liked the name because of its roots in faith. Via an ESPN story from Oct. 2025:

Cheryl Chambliss, whose late father, Donald Griffioen, was a longtime pastor and helped open churches around the country, agreed to her husband's idea with one condition: She would name a baby girl Trinity, after the Christian doctrine that says God exists as three separate persons -- the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

"We are a faith-based family," Cheryl Chambliss said. "Trinidad was just fine with me because it translates to Trinity, and so that's very important. When people ask me, he is named after the Trinity."

Cheryl told the Clarion-Ledger that she can't remember the last time she has missed one of Trinidad's games.

Cheryl and Trinidad pre-game prayer tradition

Aside from showing Trinidad's mother Cheryl in the stands, cameras have also spotted the two sharing a pre-game prayer before games.

"(Watching Trinidad) has brought me great joy," Cheryl said via the Clarion-Ledger. "I'm very grateful and thankful for the opportunity that Trinidad's been given. I'm taking it all in ... our time that has now become public, which is a pregame prayer, that was a private moment that was very public now. At the end of the day that's OK because it's spreading the word of God."

In high school in Grand Rapids, Mich., Chambliss played both football and basketball. He is grateful for his parents' sacrifices that have helped him reach one of college football's biggest stages.

"That’s my rock," Chambliss said via the newspaper of his mom. "That’s my best friend. I don’t know where I’d be without my mom and my dad. They have just poured so much into me. I appreciate their support. It’s crazy to think of all they have sacrificed and all they put in for me to get to this position right now."

Chambliss has applied for a waiver with the NCAA to grant him a medical redshirt for his 2022 season at Ferris State. That year, he suffered persistent respiratory issues which ultimately led to him having his tonsils removed. He has already committed to return to Ole Miss if his waiver gets approved, but he has not yet been granted a decision by the NCAA.
