BYU jumped out to a quick start and were never seriously threatened in a 104-76 win over Arizona State Wednesday in BYU’s Big 12 home opener.

BYU’s big three dominated, led by a career high 31 points from Richie Saunders and career high 27 from Rob Wright. AJ Dybantsa rounded things out with 23 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. Abdullah Ahmed got his first start in the place of Keba Keita, who missed the game after tweaking his ankle in practice this week. Ahmed played just 17 minutes and ended with 5 blocks, 5 rebounds, and 3 points. BYU’s defense was dominant with Ahmed on the floor and gives BYU two elite rim protectors once Keba Keita is back healthy, which should be for next game. Tyler Mrus was the high man of the bench with 8 points on two made threes.

BYU as a team shot 57% from the field and 45% from three. Turnovers were really the only thing to poke at, as BYU finished with 16 turnovers. BYU held ASU to 38% shooting from the field and 28% from three.

The win moves BYU to 14-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Big 12. This is BYU’s first 2-0 start in three Big 12 seasons; BYU started the last two seasons 2-4 in Big 12 play. BYU next travels to Salt Lake City to play Utah, the lowest rated team in the Big 12. The Utes are 8-7 on the year and have lost 4 of their last 5 games.
