The clash has been placed in serious doubt.
Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese Rematch in Doubt After Concerning Injury Update originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Indiana Fever guard Lexie Hull revealed on Tuesday that Caitlin Clark has been dealing with “frustration” amid her most recent injury spell. This does not come as a surprise, considering the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year is on her second spell on the sidelines with a lingering right groin problem, and it's the third time this season she’s had to miss multiple games due to injury.
Clark was out of commission for a second consecutive contest on Tuesday night as the Fever took on the New York Liberty in a road game at Barclays Center. Before the contest, head coach Stephanie White spoke to reporters to address Clark’s status. Unfortunately, the Fever shot-caller didn’t have much of an update available.
According to White, there is “no update” on Clark’s injury, and there is still no potential timeline for her return. The first-year Indiana coach did say that Clark met with another doctor earlier in the day to get a second opinion, but White was unable to provide any details about the consultation.
All this seems to suggest that Clark is not yet close to returning. This puts her status for Sunday’s highly anticipated matchup against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky in serious doubt.
Clark and Reese arguably have the biggest rivalry in the WNBA today, and the bad news is that it seems unlikely that fans will be treated to the latest chapter of this battle on Sunday.
It is important to note that the Fever took a cautious approach in terms of bringing back Clark the first time she injured her groin. She missed five games, including Indiana’s Commissioner’s Cup championship win against the Minnesota Lynx on July 1.
Despite their prudence, Clark still ended up re-aggravating the injury, which means that the medical staff will be even more careful in bringing her back this time around. The last thing they want is a third occurrence of this troubling groin issue.
What Is the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky’s Head-to-Head Record This Season?
Sunday’s matchup between the Fever and the Sky will be their third clash this year. The Fever blew the Sky out on opening night, 93-58, with Clark dropping an incredible 20-point, 10-rebound and 10-assist triple-double in her season debut.
The 23-year-old, however, was sidelined with a quad injury in their second meeting on June 7. Reese struggled with her shot in that one, scoring just four points on 2-of-7 shooting, but she dominated the boards with 12 rebounds. The Sky defended their home court and avenged their opening-night loss by destroying the Fever in their second matchup, 79-52.
The Fever and the Sky are tied at 1-1 on the season heading into Sunday’s game in Chicago. They meet two more times after that on Aug. 9 and Sept. 5, with both games to be played at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
