Michigan football LB Cole Sullivan reportedly transferring to Oklahoma

Michigan football linebacker Cole Sullivan, who was looked at as a rising star and playmaker on defense, is transferring to Oklahoma.

Michigan football has suffered its biggest loss to date in the transfer portal.

Cole Sullivan, a sophomore linebacker who was one of the team's top defensive players in 2025, has committed to Oklahoma, according to multiple reports. Sullivan had 44 tackles in his first season as a key defensive player under Wink Martindale, including five for loss and two sacks.

He also had a nose for the ball, recording four pass breakups, leading the team with three interceptions, forcing a fumble and coming away with a fumble recovery.

In 2024, Sullivan was named the team's special teams rookie of the year, playing in all 12 games and recording four tackles. Many believed he was expected to be a starter should he have returned in 2026.

Sullivan, who stands at 6 feet 3, 230 pounds, is from Pittsburgh and was identified by coaches over the summer as someone who was moving his way up the depth chart. Early in the season, it was clear the Wolverines weren't getting enough pressure on the quarterback with their defensive line, so they moved Jaishawn Barham (who's since declared for the NFL draft) to edge almost full time.

A major reason they felt comfortable doing so was because that opened up more snaps for Sullivan.

He met with reporters following the team's 41-27 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl loss to Texas after he recorded a career-high six tackles and was non-committal about his future, saying he liked what he heard from the new staff but implied he intended to keep his options open.

“I had a great meeting with coach Whittingham,” Sullivan said. “I really like him and what he’s bringing to this team and this program. As far as my future is concerned, it’s hard to say. There are too many uncertainties at this point, but I love this University.”

Michigan has an almost entirely new defensive staff with defensive line coach Lou Esposito the lone holdover from the previous regime. U-M brought in Jay Hill as defensive coordinator, Alex Whittingham (Kyle's son) to coach linebackers, Lewis Powell to work with edges, Jernaro Gilford in the secondary and Tyler Stockton to coach safeties.

Sullivan has already played in his new stadium. Michigan traveled to Oklahoma in Week 2 of 2025 and lost, 24-13. It also won't be long before he returns to his former home, as the Wolverines will host the Sooners in Week 2 of 2026 on Sept. 12 at Michigan Stadium.
