Manuel Neuer should return into the German national team for the World Cup in summer because the veteran goalkeeper "is still extraordinary," former Germany player Matthias Sammer has said.
"Manuel is a world-class goalkeeper with world-class charisma. On top of that, he has a world-class character," Sammer told Wednesday's edition of the Sport Bild weekly.
"Manuel is so good that you have to take him with you. I can't see any scenario in which Manuel wouldn't be good for the team. But he has to want it himself."
Bayern Munich's Neuer, 39, retired from the national team after Euro 2024. He has said on several occasions he will not return.
His successor as number one, Marc-André ter Stegen, was sidelined for months this season after back surgery, with Hoffenheim's Oliver Baumann playing in all six World Cup qualifiers.
Ter Stegen is no longer first choice at his club Barcelona who said late Tuesday that he has left their camp in Saudi Arabia for the Spanish Super Cup to undergo medical tests in Barcelona.
