New FAMU football head coach Quinn Gray and athletic director John Davis will have a joint introductory press conference this Friday, Jan. 9, on campus.
The newest hires in Florida A&M’s athletic department are scheduled to make their first addresses.
This Friday, Jan. 9, FAMU will host a joint introductory press conference for new head football coach Quinn Gray Sr. and Vice President and Director of Athletics John F. Davis at the Al Lawson Jr. Multipurpose Center on the Historically Black College and University’s Tallahassee campus.
The event begins at noon and is open to the public. For those who can’t attend, FAMU will live-stream the press conference on its social media accounts.
Gray, a record-setting quarterback for the Rattlers from 1997-2001, was hired by his alma mater as the 20th full-time head football coach on Dec. 23, 2025, to replace James Colzie III, who was dismissed on Dec. 8, 2025 after going 12-12 in two years, including being 5-7, the program’s first losing record since 2017.
FAMU signed Gray to a five-year contract worth $1.4 million, with a $240,000 starting salary to hire him away from NCAA Division II HBCU Albany State after three seasons.
Gray went 24-11 in three years with the Golden Rams.
In 2025, Gray guided the Golden Rams to a 12-2 record, the school’s most wins in a season, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship, and an appearance in the Division II quarterfinals as Albany State claimed the Black College Football national title.
Gray has been tailoring his inaugural FAMU roster since his hire, landing commitments from players such as quarterback Isaiah Knowles, who was the 2024 and 2025 SIAC Offensive Player of the Year for Gray’s Albany State teams.
As for Davis, he was announced as FAMU’s next athletic director last November to take over for Angela Suggs, who was on paid administrative leave from June 2025 until November 2025 after being arrested on fraud and theft charges stemming from her former role as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Florida Sports Foundation.
Davis formerly was the Florida Lottery’s secretary, a role he was appointed to by Governor Ron DeSantis in October 2020.
Suggs is now FAMU’s Special Assistant to the President and Advisor for Intercollegiate Athletics.
Travis Glasgow served as FAMU’s interim athletic director but left for Alabama A&M’s deputy athletic director role last October. Longtime employee, former Rattlers football player, and FAMU Sports Hall of Famer Michael Smith took over interim duties until Davis’ Jan. 5 start date.
Davis, a former Florida State Seminoles football player, will earn an annual salary of $250,000 according to his contract obtained by the Tallahassee Democrat through a public records request. He’s FAMU’s 22nd athletic director change, interim and permanent, since 1994.
