Boston could be losing a key piece of its title team.
The Boston Celtics’ championship run feels like an eternity ago, and that feeling won’t change anytime soon.
Since winning it all and earning the title of the league’s best in 2024, things have gone downhill in a hurry in Boston. While the Celtics were still considered a favorite to win the championship again in 2025, nothing went quite as planned in their defending champion campaign.
With Kristaps Porzingis missing significant time and Jayson Tatum’s eventual Achilles tear decimating the Celtics’ postseason hopes, GM Brad Stevens had to tear things down in the offseason. To get under the second apron, Boston had to make some huge moves, including the trades of Jrue Holiday and Porzingis.
With Luke Kornet going to San Antonio in free agency, there might only be one domino left to fall in the Celtics’ offseason of departures. That domino is, of course, Al Horford.
With all signs pointing to the big man leaving Boston, the Golden State Warriors have long been rumored as his next destination. CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn added to that buzz in a recent article, citing Golden State as the veteran’s best fit.
That assertion isn’t too surprising. With the Celtics firmly out of title contention next season and Horford potentially entering his final season, the Warriors offer the 2024 champion a place where he can contend for a title and maybe even start.
With Golden State’s big man room only getting shallower with Kevon Looney’s departure, Horford might just be a guarantee to end up in San Francisco after Jonathan Kuminga’s situation is taken care of. Although the Celtics certainly can’t be happy about Horford leaving, it’s easy to understand why he would make the move at this stage of his career.
