One of the biggest questions facing new Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham has been answered.

Quarterback Bryce Underwood is returning to Michigan for the 2026 season, according to multiple reports. 

Underwood showed flashes of his potential as a true freshman, earning the starting job during preseason camp and holding it throughout the year. He completed 61.1% of his passes for 2,229 yards and nine touchdowns, with six interceptions, while adding 323 rushing yards and five scores on the ground.

Michigan announced Whittingham’s hiring Dec. 26, just days before its Citrus Bowl matchup with Texas. Underwood said the following day he was eager to begin working with the new coach.

Retaining the former five-star + passer was a priority for Whittingham. The Belleville, Michigan, native was the No. 1 overall player in the 2025 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking. His flip from LSU Tigers marked a pivotal moment for the program's future. 

Underwood was also among the highest-paid quarterbacks in college football last season as part of a reported multi-year NIL deal. 

With Whittingham’s offensive background, including success at Utah with quarterback Devon Dampier, Michigan views Underwood as a key piece heading into a critical offseason. This will be a moment for OC Jason Beck to build around him as well.
