Manchester United have sacked the 40-year-old after just 14 months in charge. There has been plenty of surprise at the news because United are sixth in the Premier League, just three points behind champions Liverpool in fourth.
And just like that, the Ruben Amorim era is over. But a worrying era remains.
Manchester United have sacked the 40-year-old after just 14 months in charge. Honestly, they have been the toughest 14 months I have experienced as a fan of this club.
There has been plenty of surprise at the news because United are sixth in the Premier League, just three points behind champions Liverpool in fourth.
I have seen many neutrals bewildered by Amorim's exit, citing 'improvement' this season. But it only feels like improvement because Amorim himself oversaw historic lows last term.
A charming, charismatic coach, for sure - but also a coach with a record of 1.24 points per Premier League game, the same as Alan Pardew, Chris Coleman and Bruno Lage.
Amorim's 38.1% win rate is the worst of any permanent United manager in the Premier League era, bar Ralf Rangnick.
His problematic system had players operating out of position, while freezing out Kobbie Mainoo after exiling Marcus Rashford.
Yet, despite all of this, it was no surprise that, at the end, Amorim was speaking like a man desperate to escape. His news conferences before and after Sunday's 1-1 draw at Leeds United were telling.
Because he knows he is not solely at fault.
I am terrified at the direction United are going in under the leadership of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox.
Have they made positive changes off the pitch to become a profitable football club? Sure. But for a bunch of 'best-in-class' decision-makers, the expensive mistakes keep coming.
Dan Ashworth, Erik ten Hag and now Amorim. Why appoint a manager who has only ever played a back three, only to demand he changes that system a year later because you lack the ambition to back him with players he needs?
I do not trust this board to make the right appointment when the time comes. Not many fans do.
