ATHENS, GA (WJBF)- The Georgia Bulldogs opened up SEC play against Auburn with an already March Madness type feel in the month of January.
It was a back-and-forth game with 10 ties and 11 lead changes got sent to overtime, thanks to Auburn’s kelvin Overton whose fadeaway jumper tied the game up at 92 as time expired.
But then, Georgia’s Jeremiah Wilkinson made a couple crucial three pointers down the stretch to add to his 31 points on the day, as Georgia pulls out the 104-100 victory.
“We know what we have in our locker room. It’s a confidence booster, yeah, but we knew what we were capable of before coming into the game,” Wilkinson said.
“We told each other before the game lets act like we’re supposed to win the game, and act like we’re supposed to be here. Don’t let the fact that we haven’t beat Auburn in a couple years deter us from knowing that we’re confident and that we’re the better team out there.”
“The SEC is everything I thought it was,” said Marcus “Smurf” Millender, who scored 24 points.
“Tough environment, crowd loud, tough opponents, a lot of talent on the court, just everything about it.”
“How do you respond with a big play or two against you, an 8-0, 10-0 run or a tough call? All of that was involved in those scenarios. Are we built for this or are we not? Like I said, our guys were terrific in overtime,” said Georgia head coach Mike White.
“It’s SEC play, and we expect it. This was a great way to kick it off, we knew we had a tough one, and we went 1-0 today that was the goal,” Millender said.
“We’ve got other pieces and guys that continue to get better. Smurf Millender, we’ve got a really strong bench, great depth, we play multiple guys so it’s a confirmation of all that,” White said.
Up next, Georgia is seeking their second conference win. They hit the road to face the defending national champions, the Florida Gators. Tipoff set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
