Cincinnati Bearcats defensive coordinator Tyson Veidt is leaving for Penn State after UC's Liberty Bowl loss to Navy
MEMPHIS, TN – Two days after appearing at an AutoZone Liberty Bowl press conference, Cincinnati Bearcats defensive coordinator Tyson Veidt saw his defense give up 349 yards to Navy as the Midshipmen mashed UC in Memphis, 35-13.
To be fair, UC was playing without All-Big 12 defenders Dontay Corleone and Jake Golday, plus several defensive backs who had either departed or entered the transfer portal. But, it was the sixth time in 13 games UC's defense had given up 30 points or more.
Two of those games they won (37-34 at Kansas, 38-30 vs. Iowa State). But there hasn't been a victory since Oct. 25 and that includes giving up 45 points at Utah, 30 at Nippert Stadium against Arizona, 45 at TCU and 35 in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl to Navy.
Tyson Veidt moving on
As the Bearcats were dropping their fifth straight game, word came out that defensive coordinator Veidt was departing the program. The Enquirer confirmed through Cincinnati sources the move which will send him to Penn State with new head coach Matt Campbell.
Campbell and Veidt worked together at Iowa State and have a longtime connection.
Defensive numbers tell story
UC's rushing defense was ranked No. 96 in the NCAA. Opponents averaged over 399 yards per game. Veidt brought the 3-3-5 scheme to the Bearcats, which several Big 12 schools, including Iowa State, run. However, it would be tough to say it was a successful run overall.
UC had a 5-2 start then lost five straight to end 2024 and the 35-13 AutoZone Liberty Bowl loss was UC's fifth straight to end the season.
