After a last second win over Georgia, oddsmakers still favor the ‘Canes over the Rebels
Ole Miss fans are likely recovering from a night in the French Quarter partying long into the morning after a massive quarterfinal win over Georgia.
Oddsmakers were up late as well already posting the spreads at FanDuel Sportsbook, and the No. 10 Hurricanes are currently listed as a field goal favorite (-3) over the Rebels. The VRBO Fiesta Bowl will host the national semifinals of the College Football Playoffs on Jan. 8 at 6:30 p.m. CT.
This is the second straight game for Ole Miss to be listed as the underdog. Georgia was favored by nearly a touchdown in the quarterfinals before a Rebel comeback win, 39-34, which broke a 75-game win streak when the Bulldogs had the lead entering the fourth quarter.
Miami did its own giant hunting in the quarterfinals taking down defending champion Ohio State, 24-14. The Hurricanes also won in dramatic fashion in College Station over Texas A&M, 10-3, in the first round. Neither the Rebels or the Hurricanes made their respective conference championship games, but the teams have a combined record of 25-3.
When you look at common opponents, only Florida is on both teams’ schedules. Miami stifled the Gators to the tune of 26-7 on the ‘Canes home field while the Rebels beat Florida 34-24 in November at Vaught-Hemingway.
There is undoubtedly going to be some very physical football next Thursday when these two teams take the field. It takes very physical football to knock off teams like Georgia and Ohio State, and both teams had massive chips on its shoulders in the quarterfinals. The motivation now is a lot more clear where a win gets your team a chance for the national championship.
Miami last won a national championship in 2001. Ole Miss’ last title came in 1962. It will be a historic win for either team, but right now the Rebels are the underdogs going into the game in Glendale.
