Deciding on the best player to wear the captain’s armband can be quite tricky, especially when factoring in player form, team performance, and fixture difficulty.
Below are some captaincy options you can consider if you already own them or plan to bring them in with a transfer ahead of the Gameweek 20 deadline.
Erling Haaland (£15.1m, Man City vs. Chelsea)
Haaland remains the most popular captaincy pick among FPL managers and has been remarkably consistent throughout the season.
Despite Manchester City’s tough trip to Sunderland in GW19, which ended in a goalless draw, Haaland is expected to return to his explosive best and deliver attacking contributions.
City face another challenging opponent in Chelsea, who recently sacked their manager. While Chelsea may benefit from a short-term “new manager bounce” under an interim coach, City are still favored to claim all three points.
Haaland has recorded 19 league goals and four assists so far. His quality is unquestionable, and he is expected to continue producing significant attacking returns.
Hugo Ekitike (£9.1m, Fulham vs. Liverpool)
The French forward has been reliable in attack recently, registering more attacking returns (five goals and one assist) than Haaland (four goals and one assist) between GW15 and GW19.
Although he blanked in Liverpool’s goalless draw against Leeds in midweek, he is backed to return to creating and converting chances.
Barring injury, Ekitike is a guaranteed starter and will be Liverpool’s attacking focal point when they travel to Fulham in GW20.
Fulham currently sit 11th in the table and are on a winning run, but Liverpool’s visit will provide a stern test. Ekitike is expected to be one of the standout players in that fixture.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.9m, Leeds vs. Man United)
Priced at just £5.9m, Calvert-Lewin has been on a strong scoring run, producing back-to-back attacking returns in each of his last five Premier League appearances.
He also appeared to score in GW19 against Liverpool, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Leeds host an inconsistent Manchester United side in GW20, and handing Calvert-Lewin the captain’s armband could prove to be a smart decision ahead of the deadline.
He is backed to continue creating chances and return to his scoring ways. Owned by just 10% of managers, Calvert-Lewin is a differential worth trusting based on his current form.
Kevin Schade (£7.0m, Everton vs. Brentford)
The winger has registered eight attacking returns in the Premier League so far, with six goals and two assists, including a hat-trick against Bournemouth in GW18.
Schade has been in excellent form since the start of the season, playing a key role in Brentford’s attacking setup.
Captaining him in GW20 comes with some risk, as Brentford travel to Everton’s New Dickinson Stadium this weekend, but it could pay off if you trust your instincts.
Brentford currently sit eighth in the table with 27 points, just one point behind seventh-placed Everton. With league positions on the line, this fixture could be decisive, as both sided will be eager to secure all three points against themselves.
