Wilcox previously worked alongside new TCU OC Gordon Sammis at UConn.
Another ascending coach appears to be heading to Fort Worth to join the TCU football program in the near future. After reports revealed the Horned Frogs are set to hire Tulsa OC/QBs coach Brad Robbins to reunite with new TCU OC Gordon Sammis (both are former UConn assistants), new reports indicate TCU is angling to hire UConn RBs coach Antonio Wilcox to the same role with the Horned Frogs. Wilcox would replace Jimmy Smith, who reports indicate will be departing Fort Worth to take a coaching position with Georgia Tech football.
Jeremy Clark of 247Sports was first to report the news about Wilcox, a rising coaching talent who was named to the 247Sports “30 under 30” list of top young coaches in college football. Wilcox has been at UConn for the last three years and had a hand in developing top Huskie running back Cam Edwards, who rumbled for 1,240 yards and 15 touchdowns on 210 carries (5.9 yards per carry) this season. In 2024, UConn totaled 2,590 rushing yards, the second highest total in school history. The Huskies averaged 199.2 yards per game per game, ranking 21st in the country, while Edwards went for 830 yards and eight touchdowns on 146 carries (5.7 yards per carry).
Before starting his three-year stint with UConn, Wilcox worked at Furman for two years (2021-22) and helped develop Dominic Roberto, who had 1,117 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 197 carries (5.7 yards per carry) in 2022 after 96 carries for 709 yards and six touchdowns (7.4 yards per carry) in 2021. Wilcox worked at Division II North Greenville University for two years (2019-20) as a graduate assistant and served as an offensive quality control coach at Furman in 2018. Wilcox is a former Furman player, rushing for 1,777 yards and 21 scores.
Wilcox will be tasked with developing sophomore Jeremy Payne and freshman Jon Denman, who as of now are TCU’s top two running backs expected to return next season. The Horned Frogs lost redshirt sophomore Derrick Carroll and redshirt freshman Nate Palmer to the transfer portal, while seniors Kevorian Barnes and Trent Battle are departing due to graduation. TCU will also welcome two incoming freshmen, G’Ivori Graham and Amante Martin.
