Chelsea have announced that Enzo Maresca has left the club as their head coach.

This comes after a complete breakdown in his relationship with the club’s board.

Maresca stunned Chelsea last month when he said he had endured his worst ‘48 hours’ since joining the London outfit after their 2-0 win over Everton.

That appeared to be aimed at the Blues’ hierarchy, although he refused to explain his comments in subsequent press conferences.

Maresca was also booed by the home supporters after Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.

The club released the following statement: “Chelsea Football Club and head coach Enzo Maresca have parted company.

“During his time at the club, Enzo led the team to success in the Uefa Conference League and the Fifa Club World Cup. Those achievements will remain an important part of the club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions to the club.

“With key objectives still to play for across four competitions including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track. We wish Enzo well for the future.”

Liam Rosenior, who is managing Chelsea’s partner club Strasbourg, has emerged a leading contender to replace Maresca

Rosenior has impressed with his work at Strasbourg, guiding his team to a seventh-place finish in his debut campaign.

Maresca joined Chelsea in the summer of 2024 after taking Leicester City back into the Premier League at the first of asking.

The Italian boss secured Champions League football via a fourth-place league finish, and also led his team to success in the Europa Conference League and the Club World Cup last season.

But things have turned out to be different for the West Londoners this term.

Chelsea have won just once from their previous seven Premier League games. They currently sit fifth in the league table with 30 points from 19 matches.
