ARLINGTON, Texas -- Ohio State suffered a shocking 24-14 defeat to Miami on New Year’s Eve in the Cotton Bowl on Wednesday night.

The Buckeyes were beaten in the trenches by the Hurricanes, and now, their season is over.

Here’s everything Ohio State coach Ryan Day said after the team’s surprising defeat in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals:

Latest Ohio State Buckeyes news

  • Day didn’t make an opening statement and just began with questions from the assembled media.
  • On the 25-day layoff and how that impacted things: “I felt like it took us a while to get into the rhythm of the game...It was going to take a very, very efficient second half to win the game down 14-0.”
  • “When you have a start the way that we did, you put yourself at risk of having to be really darn near perfect in the second half to go win the game.”
  • “I take responsibility for not getting the guys ready.” Day said the team has to learn why they weren’t ready to win the first half.
  • Day said they’ll have to evaluate more on the coaching staff, and that Gabe VanSickle struggled a little bit at right guard in his first start. “I thought we had a good plan going in on how to get the ball out of our hands quick, but that obviously didn’t work.”
  • “This is part of playing this time of year. You’ve got to have depth and you’ve got to perform in those moments.”
  • Day said that Lorenzo Styles had a shoulder injury that had been nagging all season, and the left tackle Austin Siereveld had a leg contusion and was in tears about not being able to get back on the field.
  • “It hurts right now. It hurts for those guys. They put a lot of work and time into this thing. It’s our job as coaches to make sure that we figure out ways to put them in a situation to be successful.”
  • On the idea of “pushing the gas pedal” at the right time, Day said they played with tempo today, but they’ve got to make sure they’re getting the right plays and doing what they need to to get first downs. “It wasn’t done near good enough.”
  • On what happened with the pass protection tonight and in the Big Ten title game, Day said that they had a hard time right from the first third-down.
  • He said the pick six was the right decision to throw it, but credited the Miami cornerback with making a play and scoring a touchdown that proved to be a massive play.
  • Day said they felt like they had an advantage downfield in the passing game, but they also knew “the give and take” of it in relation to the pass protection and lack thereof.
  • On if he felt like the coaching staff was in a groove early, “I’ve got to look at it all and figure out what that was and what it is, because it’s not good enough. We’ve got to do better. Whatever it takes to get better, we’ll do.”
  • Day, sitting next to safety Caleb Down and quarterback Julian Sayin, he praised Downs as a “special young man” who has done a lot for Ohio State. “I’ll forever be in debt.”
  • On the decision to go with the silent count, Day said that decision was made right from the jump. “It doesn’t take a lot to really echo inside here.”
