Manchester City vs Sunderland: Predicted City starting eleven and latest City injury news

Following Arsenal’s impressive 4-1 win over Aston Villa, Manchester City face another important Premier League fixture against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light tonight. City currently sit five points behind Arsenal on the league table with a game in hand. Pep Guardiola’s side did sweep aside Sunderland at the Etihad with a 3-nil win over Régis Le Bris’ side at the beginning of December. But Sunderland are a different proposition at the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats are unbeaten at home this season so City will have to be at their best tonight against a side that sits seventh in the Premier League table.

Here is the latest City injury news and my predicted City starting eleven ahead of tonight’s match.

Latest Manchester City injury news.

Five players are unavailable for Manchester City for tonight’s match. Rayan Ait-Nouri and Omar Marmoush are unavailable due to their participation in the African Cup of Nations. Oscar Bobb, John Stones and Mateo Kovacic are all ruled out of tonight’s match due to injury.

Pep Guardiola revealed yesterday that Jeremy Doku is in line to return from injury for tonight’s match. Whether or not he starts tonight’s match remains to be seen. Rodri is also in contention to feature at some point tonight. Pep Guardiola shared that news with the media yesterday.

Predicted City starting eleven.

Gianluigi Donnarumma: Donnarumma is certain to start in goal tonight and how he deals with Sunderland’s threat from set pieces could be crucial.

Matheus Nunes: I wouldn’t be surprised if Pep Guardiola rotates his squad tonight and Abdukodir Khusanov starts at right-back. But I’ll give the nod to Nunes given the importance of tonight’s match.

Ruben Dias: Dias has a vital role to play in the heart lf Manchester City’s defence tonight. If he leads the way like he has done so well this season it could lift his team against a physical opponent.

Josko Gvardiol: I wouldn’t be surprised if Nathan Ake started tonight to save Josko Gvardiol for the upcoming Chelsea match. But Gvardiol is in strong form and that should see him start.

Nico O’Reilly: O’Reilly is almost a lock to start at left-back.

Nico: The Spanish midfielder is a certain starter tonight and will have a massive role to play in Manchester City’s midfield.

Tijjani Reijnders: I can see Bernardo Silva being saved for Manchester City’s clash with Chelsea. Reijnders has been in superb form lately in front of goal and hopefully that continues tonight.

Phil Foden: Foden is a certain starter tonight and if he plays well he can set the tone for his team.

Rayan Cherki: The French international is in superb form and is almost undroppable at this point.

Savinho: If Bernardo Silva doesn’t start tonight I can see Savinho starting out wide. If he does he needs to take his opportunity.

Erling Haaland: Haaland will lead the line for City tonight. He didn’t score at the Etihad against Sunderland and will be eager to kick off 2026 in goalscoring form.
