Lane Kiffin may be a familiar face in the stands Thursday night at the Sugar Bowl. And not just because his former team is playing.

According to Yahoo Sports' insider Ross Dellenger, the new LSU Tigers head coach is considering attending the College Football Playoff quarterfinal between Ole Miss and Georgia alongside Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry.

Dellenger reported that discussions between Kiffin and Landry are far enough along that local officials are preparing potential security plans for their arrival at the Sugar Bowl inside the Caesars Superdome. Officials at LSU and within the governor’s office did not deny the possibility when contacted by Dellenger.

Kiffin left Ole Miss for LSU on Nov. 30, weeks before the Rebels clinched a Playoff berth. His possible appearance adds another layer to an already unusual postseason run for Ole Miss. The Rebels are seeking revenge for its only regular-season loss, which was a 43-35 defeat at Georgia on Oct. 18.

Landry played a highly visible role in LSU’s coaching upheaval earlier this fall, publicly pushing for the removal of Brian Kelly and later sidelining athletic director Scott Woodward, who was fired shortly thereafter.

If Kiffin attends, he will not be the only LSU coach on site. Six assistants already under contract with LSU,  including offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr., who remains on Ole Miss’ staff through the Playoff run, a dynamic Weis described to Dellenger as “certainly weird.”
