Darnell Washington undergoes surgery on broken arm

The Steelers tight end underwent surgery

The Pittsburgh Steelers received a mix of tough news and growing optimism at head coach Mike Tomlin’s weekly press conference, as the team continues preparations for its pivotal AFC North matchup against the Baltimore Ravens.

Tomlin confirmed that tight end Darnell Washington underwent surgery Tuesday morning after suffering a broken arm in the second quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Cleveland Browns. While the procedure was successful, Tomlin declined to place a timetable on Washington’s recovery or availability moving forward, noting that more clarity will come in the weeks ahead.

Beyond Washington’s setback, the broader update painted a far more encouraging picture. Tomlin said the roster appears to be “getting healthier,” highlighting several players trending in the right direction. Wide receiver Calvin Austin III is firmly in the mix to return, with Tomlin stating the speedy playmaker “definitely has a chance” to be available this week.

There is also optimism surrounding defensive back James Pierre, corner Brandin Echols, and guard Isaac Seumalo, each of whom is working back from recent ailments. Linebacker Malik Harrison is dealing with a bone bruise that could limit him early in the practice week, though Tomlin expressed confidence in Harrison’s chances of suiting up, saying he remains “optimistic about his inclusion.”

Perhaps the most significant development involves star edge rusher T.J. Watt, who missed the past two games after suffering a collapsed lung in a freak accident. Tomlin noted a positive outlook for Watt’s potential return, calling himself optimistic that the reigning Defensive Player of the Year candidate could be back on the field for the divisional showdown.

With the Ravens looming and postseason stakes only intensifying, the Steelers’ improving health couldn’t come at a more critical time. While Washington’s absence is a notable blow, Pittsburgh may be close to gaining reinforcements elsewhere — just in time for one of its most consequential games of the season.
