Adam Vinatieri voted Hall of Fame finalist, Rodney Harrison snubbed again

The finalists for the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame class were announced on Wednesday.

The modern era finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame class 2026 have been announced, and among the 15 men is former New England Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri. For a second straight year, Vinatieri is one hurdle away from the game’s biggest individual honor.

An undrafted free agent out of South Dakota State in 1996, Vinatieri spent the first 10 of his 24 NFL seasons in New England and became an integral part of the team’s early dynasty. He kicked game-winning field goals in the team’s first two Super Bowls and later added two more rings to his collection, one as a Patriot and one as a member of the Indianapolis Colts.

Vinatieri retired in 2021 after having appeared in 365 regular season games and 32 playoff contests. He is the NFL’s all-time leading scorer as well as a member of three All-Pro teams, three Pro Bowls, the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 2000s, and the NFL’s 100th Anniversary Team.

Besides Vinatieri, short-time Patriots receivers Torry Holt and Reggie Wayne have also made it to the final round. Neither of the two appeared in a game for the organization, however.

Whereas the Hall of Fame journey continues for Vinatieri, Holt and Wayne, former Patriots Rodney Harrison, Vince Wilfork and Fred Taylor were eliminated in the semifinal round. All three have the appropriate credentials to earn the famous golden jacket one day, but the voters decided against advancing them this year.

Harrison in particular is a noteworthy absentee from the finalists. A cornerstone of two Super Bowl-winning defenses in New England, he is a three-time All-Pro and two-time Pro-Bowler who is one of only two NFL players — the other being Hall of Famer Ray Lewis — to register 30 interceptions and 30 sacks over the course of their careers. He also has been enshrined into both the Patriots’ and the Chargers’ team Halls of Fame.

And yet, the Pro Football Hall of Fame keeps eluding him. While he is a five-time semifinalist and was named a finalist two years ago, he remains on the outside looking in.

Even with him and fellow Patriots Hall of Famer Wilfork not among the finalists, the Patriots are well-represented. Besides Vinatieri, longtime head coach Bill Belichick and team owner Robert Kraft are finalists in the coach and contributor category, respectively.

In total, between four and eight new members will be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2026, including up to five modern-era players such as Vinatieri. Between one and three of the combined five senior, coach and contributor finalists will make the cut as well.

The full 2026 Hall of Fame class will be announced ahead of the Super Bowl in February.
