DJ is playing professionally in Montenegro
Darius Johnson was a UCF Knights legend and fan favorite during his four-year tenure from 2021 to 2025. Johnson averaged nearly 13 points, 4 assists, and 2 steals per game as a Knight. Johnson made the 2022 AAC All-Freshman Team, but his 2024-25 season as a senior would be his best at UCF.
Johnson averaged a career-high 17.4 points per game and also recorded career highs in field goal percentage, 3-point shooting, free throw percentage, rebounds, and assists per game. Johnson also averaged 2.2 steals per game for the third consecutive season.
After last season ended, Johnson had solid potential, but he didn’t get a chance to play in the NBA or the G League for this season. Today, Johnson is playing for the SC Derby in the KK Studentski Centar (SC Derby) of the ABA League in Podgorica, Montenegro. Johnson first joined the team in July.
SC has struggled overall as a team this season, but Johnson has been a major bright spot by being one of the team’s most reliable players on both ends of the court.
Johnson’s 121 points this season are the second-most among the SC roster. Like at UCF, Johnson has been able to get steals; his 1.7 steals per game lead the Derby. Johnson remains a consistent 3-point shooter, shooting 40 percent behind the arc.
Johnson had his best game this season against the Borac-SC Derby on Dec. 13 when he scored 21 points, made 4 3-pointers, dished out 8 assists, and had an impressive 5 steals. Johnson’s season-high in points this season is 24.
Johnson was struggling to find his rhythm in the first five games he played in, but his past four have been solid. Over the past four games combined, Johnson has averaged over 17 points per game.
At UCF, Johnson was able to be a scoring machine with his ability to shoot the 3-pointer. Now, Johnson is doing that with his new team in Montenegro. Over the course of the season with the SC Derby, Johnson will be relied on by his peers to score and play defense.
