Las Cruces girls' wrestling's Jazlyn Castro is the Las Cruces Sun-News El Paso Children's Hospital Athlete of the Week for Dec. 15-20.

Castro was one of 15 basketball and wrestling nominees from Las Cruces, Centennial, Organ Mountain and Mesilla Valley Christian. Fellow nominees included Las Cruces girls' wrestling's Emberlyn Atma, Alise Eatmon, Anastacia Cisneros and Stephanie Rojas, Las Cruces boys' wrestling's Kolby Gonzales, Daniel Amaro and Carlos Gamboa, Organ Mountain girls' basketball's April Herrod, Centennial girls' basketball's Alanna Perrault, Organ Mountain boys' basketball's Emmitt McDaniel, Centennial boys' basketball's Tracen Huntsman and Kouliebchen Tou and Mesilla Valley Christian boys' basketball's Camden Daves and Darion Williams.

Castro collected 6,232 votes. Atma was her closest competitor at 5,824 votes.

Castro took first place in the 100-pound weight class at the Girls Rio Hondo Scuffle in Roswell to earn her nomination. She defeated Ruidoso's Giavanna Chavez, Clovis' Xeomara Garcia, Carlsbad's Ava Guymon, Alamogordo's Alianna Rigales and Mayfield's Adylenne Marquez to take home the prize. Her bout with Marquez was the championship round.
